Anthony Garcia To Play In Bangalow

Outstanding Australian guitarist Anthony Lamont Garcia will give a concert at the A&I Hall on Sunday 12 September.
Anthony recently received federal funding through the Contemporary Music Touring Program, a government initiative to broaden public access to Australian contemporary music specifically in regional areas. Described as a modern day Villa Lobos, Anthony’s distinct compositional style echoes his affinity with folk, jazz, pop and Latin styles as well as years of experience performing classical repertoire. Among the repertoire being presented Anthony will feature two of his most recently composed works, Malili Dreaming and Not Far from Home, that combine elements of popular and folk music with Asiatic influences.
Anthony returned to Australia last year after four years living in Mexico. During his time there, Anthony held the position of Director of the Guitar Department at the Autonomas University of Yucatan, where he established and directed a guitar orchestra that performed regularly throughout southeast Mexico. While in Mexico, he was privileged to perform in a number of exotic locations such as the Mayan ruins of Uxmal. Anthony also established an annual guitar festival that continues to grow in popularity to this day
There will be three separate events associated with Anthony’s visit to Bangalow.
The first is a masterclass/workshop for people with some proficiency with the guitar who would benefit from some small group interaction with a master player. It will be held from 2 –5pm on Saturday 11th September at the A&I Hall, Bangalow. The workshop is free of charge to participants, but numbers are limited and bookings are essential (phone Michael 6687 1081). Music lovers are welcome to attend as observers.
The second will be a public concert at 3pm on Sunday 12th September in the A&I Hall. Tickets are very reasonably priced at $12 adult and $8 student/concession and are available at Barebones Artspace (6687 1393)
The third will be a concert/talk for students at Bangalow Primary School on Monday 13th September. Details to be advised through the school.
All in all, a wonderful long weekend of top class guitar playing in Bangalow and the first of what is hoped to be a regular monthly Sunday afternoon concert series in the A&I Hall. Michael Malloy
