Historical Society News

The Historical Society is looking forward to a great year, with a number of exhibitions planned. We have been working hard over the break to give the Museum a new and exciting look. The Society is endeavouring to focus exhibits on photographs rather than memorabilia as we have very limited storage space. We would also like to become more technologically savvy. We have many old photographs which we would like to reproduce, but not sure which is the best way to do this to get maximum results. Also we would like to introduce sound into our exhibits. The Society is really in need of some young, bright members who can assist in bringing the Museum into the 21st Century. If you think you may be able to help us in any of these areas on a voluntary basis, we would love to hear from you. Contact Wendy on 6688 4342.

Exhibitions

Our first exhibition for this year will be on “the father of Australia” Governor Lachlan Macquarie. It is 200 years since he arrived to find a struggling, lawless, convict outpost at ‘New South Wales’. By the time he left our shores some 12 years later we were an thriving, expanding, confident country called ‘Australia’.

To commemorate Anzac Day this year our exhibition will cover the Boer War and Breaker Morant. We feel this is a very topical subject as a comprehensive review of the military law, under which the Australian soldiers, Breaker Morant and Peter Hancock, were sentenced and executed by the British, has concluded that the men were the victims of a gross miscarriage of justice and the verdict should be overturned.

Both exhibitions will run through until the end of April. Entry will be by gold coin donation.

Tea Room Update

After a much welcome rest the volunteers at the tearoom are all raring to go as from Saturday, 6 March. Many hours of planning, tasting and laughing have gone into the menus for the month of March. There will be some great new cooks this year, Trish Bleakley and Carol Darroch are coming on board to help Wendy and Lyn, so you can look forward to some delicious home cooked meals and cakes being served.

On the weekend of March 13 and 14 there will be an Irish theme to the menu to celebrate St. Patrick’s day which falls on Wednesday 17 March. Delicious Beef and Guiness Pie will definitely be on the menu.

For the Easter weekend the tea room will be open, but serving only a limited menu due to many of the volunteers being busy with family and friends. Quiches, salads, sandwiches, melts and delicious cakes and scones will be available.

We look forward to seeing all our customers and catching up with all the news of the past couple of months.

If you would like to volunteer for the tearoom, please contact Wendy on 6688 4342. Wendy Grissell
