Newrybar School News

Healthy kids news: the kids are loving the fruit platter which is delivered every Tuesday, bringing them running “like bees to honey” to quote a teacher last week.

Fruit trees and crops: basil and parsley are powering in the main vegie plot, fruit trees are thriving in the rain, and K-1 class have replanted seeds and seedlings ready for autumn.

Extra creative arts: the usual dance, music and art lessons – which form a particularly strong creative arts program for a small school – are complemented by a special six-week intensive with four staff offering guitar, woodwork, drama and dance or clay work, for an hour each week.

The teaching load: with three teachers daily, the 35 children benefit from their small learning groups, with a maximum of 14 children per teacher for maths and english. That’s pretty intensive teacher time!

Landcare Request

The Landcare group needs to rebuild our website – we lost it a few years ago. We were wondering if anyone in the community with the technology and skill would be generous enough to donate the time to put this together for us. We have, and would supply, the pages/info and organise domain and hosting. It’s just the assembly. Contact me on plants@raggedblossom.com.au

Family Fun Day

Over 150 excited kids plus their parents, grandparents and carers descended on the Macadamia Castle for a recent family fun day, hosted by the Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) and Castle owners, Tony and Rie Gilding.

The afternoon attracted families from Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, Woodburn and Ballina, to Lismore, Alstonville, Casino and Kyogle.

There was plenty for all ages to enjoy: numerous animal visits, feeding and petting; train rides; fantastic entertainment by wonderful local musicians and balloon artists, fantastic food courtesy of Byron Youth Service - and a hotly contested mini golf tournament won by 11-year old Chi Weller from Ewingsdale.

An event highlight was the presentation of a cheque to the NRCF for $5,000 by the Gildings. This donation and all money raised on the day has been added to the NRCF’s perpetual community fund, to be used to support worthy causes across the Northern Rivers.

The NRCF would like to thank the Gildings and their staff who stayed on after hours, as well as the many entertainers and supporters on the day. For more information about NRCF go to www.nrcf.org.au or call 6621 9996.

Too Often the Sound Lets you Down.

Sound is an often over looked but crucial element of any good film. There is nothing more disappointing for an audience than not to be able to hear the dialogue or to be blasted out by a loud sound track. Guntis Sics knows how to get it right, his extensive list of impressive films is evidence of his skill. On February 24th, Guntis is going share some of his trade secrets in the Screenworks Masterclass Sound Recording on Location.

Guntis explains ”film and television are visual centric mediums and sound, as a powerful storytelling tool, can often be overlooked or simply left in the too hard basket. Quality location recording is an important first step in using sound to it’s full potential.” In the Screenworks Masterclass Guntis will show examples of the work he has done and demonstrate equipment as well as explore the logic of film making and the art of listening.

Guntis Sics has been working in the film and TV industry for close to 30 years. His extensive resume includes films such as Australia, Moulin Rouge and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. He has received an Oscar nomination, an Emmy nomination and is a BAFTA winner. He has also worked in film education at AFTRS, IFSS and SAE and has conducted many seminars and workshops based on film and film sound.

“In this era of multi tasking, the budget conscious film maker needs to understand what is involved with quality sound recording and mixing in order to achieve quality with their productions.” Says Jill Moonie, Screenworks General Manager. “ I was impressed with the content of the films in the finals of the Byron All Shorts but was surprised how many film makers did not get the sound right, it demonstrates that there is a real need in this region to educate people in sound recording and mixing.”

Screenworks Masterclass Sound Recording on Location will be held on Wednesday 24th February from 1 – 5pm at Guntis studio. Places are limited so bookings are essential. To book or for more information visit www.screenworks.com.au or ph 6687 1599

International Women’s Day

A group of young women in the Byron Shire have come together to help run this year’s International Women’s Day event, and all women in the Shire are encouraged to take part.

The collaboration involving young women from the Byron Shire Youth Council and the Byron Girls’ Group are assisting Mullumbimby’s Women’s Resource Service to hold a photographic exhibition on 8 March - International Women’s Day.

This year’s event is an exhibition of women’s photos reflecting the many ways women achieve success and contribute to the life of our community.

“We are aiming to make it a celebratory event for all women in the Byron Shire,” said Daisy Sowter, a member of both the Youth Council and the Byron Girls’ Group.

“We want women from all walks of life, different ages and backgrounds, to submit photos that reflect local women’s lives and their achievements.

“The event’s going to be a real celebration. We’re aiming to cover the walls of the exhibition space with photos from women in our community, about women in our community,” she said.

The group has set a number of photographic themes and hopes to encourage a wide range of images to tell the stories of all women, including those who have a disability, those with or without children, older women, Indigenous women and young women.

The themes include: Bundjalung Women; Women at Work; Self Expression - What Women do, Make and Wear; Women in Love; Herstory, Women Over Time; Women and Water

Neroli Jager, from the Women’s Resource Service said she was thrilled that young women were taking the reins for IWD this year.

“This event is not just for the artists and photographers in the Shire,” Ms Jager said.

“The group is encouraging every woman to feel she can send in a photo that she has taken,” she said.

Entries close Monday 1 March 2010 and the exhibition will be held on Monday 8 March from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall.

For more information on how to submit a photo, download an entry form from Council’s website www.byron.nsw.gov.au, pick one up from the Shire Libraries or contact Council officer Belle Arnold on 6685 9341.
