What is Adfas

It’s your local Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society!

For everyone who is excited by exotic places and different cultures, interesting people, gardens, music, history and architecture, it is your opportunity to explore these topics here in the Byron Shire.

The Society was formed 10 years ago by an enthusiastic group of friends to bring international and well-known Australian speakers to our region as part of their extensive lecture circuit. There are more than 30 groups around Australia, mostly in capital cities, and the Society is affiliated with the founder, NADFAS, in the UK.

There are eight lectures during 2010, the first one on Monday 15 March in the A&I Hall, Station Street, Bangalow.

The speaker is Englishman John Osborne, MA Cantab (Cambridge), and he will be bringing us a very topical subject: ‘Iran – land of great kings, shahs and ayatollahs’.

He will be illustrating his talk which will range from the Persian Empire, including the development of mosques and palaces of the Islamic period, right up to the late 20th Century of Ayatollah Khomeini.

Iran is so much in the news these days and largely unvisited by most of us. John Osborne lived for many years in the Middle East after graduating from Cambridge in the Classics. He leads and lectures on specialist cultural and historical tours visiting many countries including Iran.

The doors open at 6.30pm and this year we are offering refreshments (with a glass of wine) before the lecture. The lecture starts at 7.30pm. Following the lecture coffee/tea and cake is served, providing an opportunity to meet the speaker, engage in some lively discussion and chat with new friends. Membership is $110 per year per person (which works out to be $13.75 per lecture) or come as a guest for $20 per person, per lecture. This is a great introduction and you will be made most welcome.

For further information, contact the Membership Secretary, Terry Hand, on 6684 5084 or the Secretary, Dawn Lotty, 6687 2442.
