This month’s Greenies are Landcare’s ‘Friday morning Bangalow team’. If you walk around the new Bangalow ovals on the
walking track you will notice how well many of the new plantings are doing. This is due to some excellent maintenance by Landcare volunteers and a paid maintenance team. One area really stands out – the south west corner along Byron Creek near the bridge. This is the domain of the ‘Friday group’ who spend most Friday mornings there.
The four key volunteers are Bangalow residents Roger Foreman (left in picture above), Robert Lotty (right) and Kevin Peters and Peter Carey from Friday Hut Road. The area is a mix of 10 year-old plantings and some very new parts. In particular, they are now tackling the steep roadside area next to the bridge. This was a mass of camphor, privet and weeds, littered with cans and other rubbish from passers-by. (They took away two large wheelie bin loads!) This is now clear, terraced and ready for planting.
In the more established parts the team keeps down weeds and grass, mulches and replants losses from flood, frost and dogs. Some parts along the bank now have sufficient cover to be on their ‘low maintenance list’ and are well worth a look.
The team stressed how important it is “ to do one area well then move on, rather than a mass planting let go wild”. Well done folks! Brian Sunstrom
