Call To Arms against men’s cancers

Cancer Council’s Alstonville office is calling on all local sportsmen to fight against one of their fiercest opponents, cancer, by participating in the Call To Arms fundraiser this July.

Call To Arms is one of the Cancer Council’s annual fundraising events that offers men’s sporting groups of all ages the opportunity to help raise funds and awareness for cancer – a disease that affects one in two Australian men by age of 85.Sporting clubs are invited to hold a Call To Arms match in July where players wear a yellow armband in a show of support to men with cancer, survivors, and those who have lost their lives. Clubs run fundraising activities on the day or through the month, with all funds going towards Cancer Council’s men’s cancer research, prevention, information and support services.

Last year, more than 3700 sports teams in NSW took part in the fundraiser, and helped raise more than $350,000 across Australia. Teams ranged from local Under 5’s soccer teams to professional clubs like NRL’s Tigers and Eels. “Compared to women, Australian men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer, and men are also less likely to survive their diagnosis,” said Sandra Rowan at Cancer Council NSW’s Alstonville office. “What a lot of men don’t realise is that at least one in three cancers are preventable. By taking part in Call To Arms we’re hoping men can not only help raise funds but also learn more about cancer prevention.More than 1100 men in the Far North Coast are diagnosed with cancer each year, and more than 370 die each year.”
