Art features strongly throughout Bangalow Community Children’s Centre so it was very rewarding when a canvas painted by the children in the west room won the NAIDOC Week competition for canvasses depicting Aboriginal unsung heroes.
The winning canvas, which has been on display as part of a NAIDOC exhibition, will be in Bangalow and on display at the BCCC’s annual art exhibition, ‘Imagination’, on Friday 23 July from 7pm at the A&I Hall, along with artwork from the children and other artists.
The children have been learning about Aboriginal activist Vincent Lingiari through the song, From Little Things, Big Things Grow, and a story book of the words of this song put together with pictures drawn by the children of the Gurindji people. This was the inspiration for the painting that the children created.
Centre Director, Kerry Elbourn said, “Being a child is such a wonderfully free time to experiment with colour, lines, space, movement, interpretation and expression, without the need to produce a final result that is approved by others.”
The exhibition (entry $10 includes wine and cheese) is a chance to pick up some wonderful artwork as several of the children’s group masterpieces will be auctioned off, along with paintings from local artists. Karen Jordan
This adult event costs $10 and includes wine and cheese, a door prize and trivia questions. Families can also view the artwork the next day for a gold coin donation. Karen Jordan
