Louise Schofield, curator, author, lecturer and television producer is our guest speaker on Monday 21 July in the A&I Hall, Station Street, Bangalow.
Louise, an archaeologist, tours extensively with NADFAS, Christies Education and cruise companies and will be sharing her passion with ADFAS members and guests in the warmed and congenial surroundings of the A&I Hall.
Ethiopia has a vast history and its place in Africa was of immense importance in the past. It was rich beyond belief and the centre of very early Christianity. The vast headwaters of the Nile and the extremes of the landscape shaped the destinies of her people and archaeologists have been there for the past hundred years or so under very difficult conditions.
Louise has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 and she will be recounting some of her adventures whilst living in a tent in a village in the north eastern province of Tigray. The wonderful people, indomitable in spite of their hardships, live a life that is truly biblical and timeless. Their ancient history is populated with evocative names, the Queen of Sheba once ruled over the north of the country.
Louise’s scope of work encompasses Albania, Turkey, Syria, Greece and Crete but on this occasion she will be bringing Ethiopia to Bangalow.
Please join us from 6.30pm for light refreshments and a fascinating lecture at 7.30. Supper follows with another opportunity to discuss the lecture and meet friends over very good coffee and cake.
Membership fees, on a sliding scale, may be paid and guests are always welcome for $20 per person. Enquiries to Dawn Lotty 6687 2442. Pictured is a stained-glass panel from an early church, depicting Haile Selassie on a white charger escaping a fire-breathing dragon. Carole Gamble
