Last month I presented an overview of TinCan, the organisation in the Teven, Tintenbar, Fernleigh area, assisting local seniors maintain quality of life while remaining in their homes as long as possible. I described activities at Tintenbar hall such as scrabble (next event 11 March) and carpet bowls (next on 5 March). Other upcoming Tincan activities include:
- Each fortnight, on Thursday morning, a bus picks up residents from as far as Newrybar, to take them into Ballina. They go to River Street and then to Ballina Central and Ballina Fair. For some it is just window-shopping at their own pace, others purchase their fortnightly groceries. It is also a nice drive through the countryside, seeing how the roadworks are progressing and then a cup of coffee in town. At a small cost of $7, residents are picked up between 9 to 9.30am. and return about 2pm. The next fortnightly bus will be Thursday, 4 March.
- For the last four years TinCan has organised a Seniors’ morning tea in March. This year it is Monday, 22 March from 10.30am to 1.30pm at Tintenbar hall, with the theme of ‘Stepping Out in Tintenbar’. The morning will include an old time dancing exhibition, by Des and Pat Baptist, and performances by Teven Tintenbar Primary School and local musical identities. A light lunch is provided.
- In May TinCan participates in the biggest Morning Tea, in association with the Cancer Council.
We welcome new participants to all these activities. We can arrange volunteers to pick up people without transport – more volunteer drivers welcome too. Fun and fitness are but a phone call away. Toska McLeod (Fernleigh)
