psychological health check

With the close of one year and the opening of another, many of us may take some time to appraise the quality of our lives, reflect on where we have come and consider where we wish to head. Sometimes this process can highlight patterns that have become less than helpful in our lives and relationships, or point to areas where we may need support to improve or expand. Being out of touch with ourselves, and that which matters to us, can bring about a sense of hopelessness and isolation, fear and being overwhelmed, or we can come to feel stuck or dissatisfied with ourselves and in life. This might be a time when you could benefit from support from a psychologist to enhance your psychological wellbeing.

Local Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist Sara Goldie specialises in empowering people to move through challenging times and make changes in their life so that they emerge with fresh insights and a greater sense of satisfaction, connection and meaning. She has over 12 years experience in mental health and psychotherapy, and holds an integrated approach to working with personal and life issues.

Each Tuesday in February, Sara is holding free lunchtime mindfulness meditation sessions to demonstrate how mindfulness can be integrated into our daily life. With regular practice, mindfulness can help us still the mind, open our hearts and bring about an enhanced sense of wellbeing. Tuesday 2, 9, 16 and 23 February, 1-2pm (limit six participants each sitting). Suite 4, 20 Byron Street. Phone: 6687 0431; email: info@saragoldie.com

katy berentsen: reflexology

Katy Berentsen practices reflexology, Emmett and Bowen techniques in Bangalow and is a professional member of the Australian reflexology association.

Reflexology is based on the principle that all organs and glands in the body have corresponding reflexes in the feet, hands and ears. Pressure is applied to specific points with thumb, fingers and knuckles to stimulate or sedate and reduce tension, ultimately looking to ease symptoms. The most common reaction to a reflexology session is one of deep relaxation accompanied by a sense of well-being. Energy levels are often increased and pain levels decreased. Clients often report they are sleeping much better.

The elderly benefit enormously from this modality as blood and nerve supply to muscles improve; aiding and relaxing spasms and tension and increasing lymph flow. The process of elimination works more efficiently aiding fluid retention, constipation and restlessness. Clients often comment on how different their feet feel. The hands and/or the ears can be worked effectively, too.

The Emmett technique is unique and it is often incorporated in Katy’s treatments (as well as a stand-alone modality). Application of light pressure at particular points, and in sequences, enables a release of muscle groups. People are amazed when, with a few moves on their feet, their balance is switched on and their stability has been vastly improved. Some symptoms which are relieved are neck, shoulder, back, hip and stomach discomfort, knee and ankle restrictions, forearm and grip strength. Call 0418 724 711. to find out more.
