Editorial : February 2010

Welcome to another year of Heartbeat. May all of us in this special place have a healthy, wealthy, wise and caring 2010.

We have just celebrated Australia Day and, while not everyone shares the belief that January 26 is the most appropriate date, there is still a need to acknowledge our maturity as a nation and the ideals and aspirations we share. Though I, for one, would be quite pleased if there was a little less flag waving and wearing of the Cronulla cape. This misplaced pride demeans us all. That aside, there is a lot to be proud of – especially those Australians who have contributed to making this country a better and more caring place. See our local heroes below.

While we bask in this glorious weather, and celebrate our time together, there is a dark black spot on the planet: Haiti. The word closest to describing what is unfolding there is ‘Apocalyptic’. The devastation and ruination certainly put our lives here into perspective, and demonstrate how so desperately unequal – even unfair – this planet can be. In Australia we have, quite probably, the very best of all possible worlds. It is important we remember to share with those less fortunate – and provide help where we can.

On a personal note, Heartbeat is still looking for a new editor. The rewards are many and the enjoyment limitless, with many team members to support your every move. Please get in touch (see phone, etc. below).
