ADFAS invitation to 2010

Your local Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFAS) is to start the year with an early evening barbeque on Sunday, 28 February from 4pm to 7pm.

The Committee takes great pleasure in inviting current, past and future members to join them in the grounds of Heritage House on the corner of Ashton and Deacon Streets in Bangalow for the launch of this year’s program. There is no charge to attend the barbeque for delicious food prepared with the help of the Bangalow Lions Club.

The gathering will preview the program of lectures for 2010, and it is your chance to find out more about the benefits of membership and perhaps renew old acquaintances. Membership subscriptions for 2010 are due now and may be paid at the barbeque.

The Byron Bay and District Society has been meeting locally for 10 years and during that time has been enthusiastically run in conjunction with ADFAS groups around Australia. Originally started in UK nearly 40 years ago, it has facilitated fascinating and informative illustrated lectures on a huge range of topics ever since. Thousands attend the lecture circuit with international and Australian speakers sharing an enormous range of travel tales and artistic enthusiasm.

I hope that you can enrich your life and join us, share some hospitality and find out more about your local ADFAS.

Dangerously Poetic Press

We will kick off our 2010 reading series on Sunday, 21 February, 3-5pm, at The Yogalates Studio, 72 Byron Street, Bangalow. Incorporated in 2002, Dangerously Poetic is a community group seeking to encourage, publish and promote quality poetry from the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. They offer poetry readings in Bangalow every other month on the third Sunday from 3-5 pm. All are welcome.

This month the theme will be ‘The Poetry of Praise’. All through the ages – from ancient psalms to contemporary outbursts of gratitude and joy – it’s through poetry and song that we celebrate our blessings. This reading will feature poems that lift the spirit. Featured readers and live musicians to be announced.

The audience is invited to bring in a favourite poem of praise for an extended open reading. Homemade tea and treats will be available for purchase. Entry: $5/4 for Dangerously Poetic members. Please bring a chair unless you are happy to sit on cushions. Laura Jane Shore

Bangalow and District Garden Club

Many members of our club are becoming increasingly interested in allowing the prevailing conditions of climate, geography, geology and botany to influence the scope and style of their gardens. Gardeners want to work in harmony with local conditions, using rainforest, native, indigenous and subtropical plants that thrive in our conditions. This year we aim to increase the amount of time given to botanical and horticultural matters in the monthly meetings.

For the March meeting guest speaker, Jane Davenport, has chosen the topic ‘Garden Guardians’: Identifying and attracting good bugs to your garden. Hazel Sowerby will enlighten us on some natural remedies in her talk ‘Garden Herbs for Wellbeing’ at the April meeting.

All interested persons are invited to come along to the first meeting of 2010 on Wednesday, 3 February at 1.30pm in the Anglican Hall. Helen Johnston (President)

Bangalow Quilters Club

The Bangalow Quilter’s Raffle was drawn in December 2009, prior to the end of year Christmas party. Pip Taylor from Silver Thread in Mullumbimby was invited to draw the raffle.

The funds raised will be used to stage a Quilt Show in Bangalow on the last weekend in March 2010 and any funds raised at this event will go towards the charitable endeavours that Bangalow Quilters have been involved in over the past decade.

In 2009 we made in excess of 20 ‘Goodwill’ quilts. One of these was used in the fundraiser for the Michael Maladay Family. We were fortunate that during the year we received financial or other assistance from the Byron Shire Council, Byron Bay Services Club, Silver Thread, Mullum, the Northern Rivers Writers Centre and Bangalow Farmers Market.

Medical Centre news

Great news: we are very happy to announce we have two new lovely female GPs who started at Bangalow Medical Centre at the end of January. We have been looking for additional female doctors for some time.

Dr Sami Spencer has worked with us before and is returning to the Centre. Sami’s interests are women’s health, public health and palliative care.

Dr Nispa Krongkaew will be joining us from the NSW GP training program, having moved to the North Coast from Canberra a year ago.

We are also pleased to announce we have many enquiries from new doctors to the area wanting to work with us. We are hoping this renewed interest in our practice will mean more permanent doctors and a more comprehensive team approach to health in the community.

For those concerned with avoiding swine flu, we are still running immunisation clinics for those wanting to be vaccinated. This is Bulk Billed. There are concerns that a second wave of swine flu will be seen in Australia. A quarter of the community has been vaccinated. We have had no serious side effects from this very safe vaccine.

We also have a new-look website which details information on our large range of services. It also gives a good overview of the practice and the service we offer the people of Bangalow.

For a full range of our services and details on the practice please visit our website www.bangalowmedicalcentre.com

Psychologist Open House

Local Clinical Psychologist Sara Goldie is having a couple of ‘open house’ events for the community to celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of her counselling and psychotherapy practice in Bangalow. Sara moved into the area two years ago from WA and has over 12 years experience in the field of mental health and psychotherapy. Each Tuesday in February Sara is holding lunchtime mindfulness meditation sessions (see information page 21).

Also, if you’ve been intrigued about what goes on in psychotherapy, thinking about embarking on the personal therapy journey, or considering seeing a psychologist for a personal or life issue, Sara welcomes you to ‘Behind the Therapy Room Door’, an informal event where her consulting room door will be open, providing members of the community an opportunity to come in, make contact and discuss any questions you might have. Open door event: Tuesday, 9 Feb, 2-4pm. Suite 4, 20 Byron St, Bangalow. Ph: 6687 0431.

Screenworks Opportunities

Northern Rivers Screenworks has received a $17,500 grant from Regional Arts Australia to fund a mentoring program for emerging producers in the region.

“Screenworks’ goal is to build careers and the level of production in the screen industry across the Northern Rivers region,” says Screenworks General Manager Jill Moonie. “In order to do this we need to create opportunities for producers and productions in this region. We were delighted to receive this funding to set up a mentorship program for emerging producers in the Northern Rivers region.”

In the Screenworks program ‘Mentoring the Next Generation of Screen Content Creators’, four emerging producers will each be attached over a period of six weeks to a senior producer on a commissioned project such as a feature film, documentary, TV or new media program. The project can be in any stage of development or production. Following the attachment, guidance and assistance will be provided by the senior producer in a series of mentored meetings over six months after this period, to offer advice and direction on the emerging producer’s project.

Screenworks is calling for expressions of interest from both professional producers working in the region to be mentors and emerging producers who would be interested in and are at a point to take advantage of this opportunity. Formal applications for this program will be available in February.

The Northern Rivers Screenworks Region includes from the Tweed in the north to the southern end of the Clarence Valley and from the coastal plains in the east to the Great Dividing Range in the west.

This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s regional arts program, the Regional Arts Fund, which gives all Australians, wherever they live, better access to opportunities to practice and experience the arts.

For more details on selection criteria visit the Screenworks website www.screenworks.com.au or call on 6687 1599.

Volunteers to Visit Families

Are you feeling inspired to become active in your community in 2010? Do you enjoy being around babies and toddlers? Do you have a couple of hours a week to spare? If you answered yes to these questions then the Volunteer Home Visiting Service would like to invite you to join our fantastic team of volunteers.

The Volunteer Home Visiting Service has been a successful program running in the local area for ten years. The service operates from the Ballina-Byron Family Centre and has been an important support for many families in the region. The program has a team of amazing volunteers who are committed to providing a community service to ensure families with young children feel supported and maintain a sense of connection to their community. Whilst emphasis for the program is on support for families, it is also recognised that volunteers participate in the program to meet likeminded people and engage in volunteer social events, develop and share their skills, and gain personal satisfaction. For these reasons the service places great importance on fulfilling these desired outcomes for volunteers.February 10 p07.pdf

Parenting, although often fun and full of loving moments, can also be emotionally and physically demanding. Volunteers can assist with maintaining ‘healthy stress levels’ by supporting families to link into their local community and service options, reduce a parent’s sense of isolation and enhance the fun of raising children.

Our next volunteer training will commence on February 18 and run over four Thursdays. Anyone interested in being a volunteer with the service can contact Bernie Wilson on 6686 4109. This service is funded by Community Services and all volunteers are required to complete a Working With Children check.
