Marlie Campton took out the award for Byron Shire Junior Sportsperson of the Year. Already a champion cross-country runner, 11 year old Marlie won her way through zone and regional finals in the 800m event. She competed at the NSW Athletic
Championships, held in the Sydney Olympic Stadium late in 2009, where she won her heat and was placed a close fourth in the finals. A major achievement for someone with a bright athletics future ahead of her (a story on Marlie appeared in the December’s Heartbeat).
Neil Moran took out the award for Byron Shire Sportsperson of the Year. Playing at prop for Bangalow Rugby Union Club, Neil has been a key part of Bangalow’s five back-to-back grand finals wins in the Far North Coast Village Competition. A true sportsman, on and off the field, Neil is an excellent role model for younger players in the team and has been a strong supporter of the club’s junior teams.
Neil’s other great achievement has been the chairmanship of the Richard Allen 14 Fund. He co-ordinated the fundraising and building of a specially designed house that enabled injured rugby player, Richie Allen, and his family to stay in the Bangalow community that love and supports them.
Two very worthy winners and outstanding Bangalow citizens. M
