Launching straight into another year without so much as a ‘by-your-leave’ – now that’s what I’m talking about! New Year’s resolutions already forgotten, let us all forge ahead and make 2010 a year of change. Music, photography, painting, sketching, dancing, theatre, drama; a plethora of creativity, says Marika Bryant

  • Photography Competition: 2010 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award with $20,000 prizes. First Prize $10,000 (acquisitive) plus $10,000 acquisitions with judge Judy (Annear) Senior Curator Photography, Art Gallery of NSW.   • Art Prize: The Art & Australia Contemporary Art Prize (acquisitive) open to Australian and NZ artists within the first five years of their professional practice. Four artists are selected annually with their work featured on the back cover of Art & Australia, accompanied by a profile of their practice. One work from one of the four artists is then purchased for the Art & Australia collection. The deadline is March 1: visit www.visualarts.net.au for applications.
  • Writing Award: Art Monthly Australia Emerging Arts Writers Award looking for writers to respond to the theme ‘Art and Community’. Australian residents can write about any nation or era (or even their own work) with the community philosophy as the backbone. Open category prize: $2000 plus publication in a special Art + Community edition of AMA in 2010. Senior school-age category prize is $500 plus $500 in art supplies for their school.   • Jack Derwin is back live at Bang Thai for their urban jazz night Friday, 26 February. Jack is a solo acoustic blues artist living in Sydney. He has been nominated for the ‘chain’ blues award in the last few years. He will play a mix of originals and stamp his own mark on songs by legendary blues and acoustic artists.   • Exhibition: Art on the Move at the Moller Pavilion on Bangalow Market Day, Sunday, 28 February, boasting Mike King-Prime, Soren Carlbergg, Holly Willis, Gerry Willis, Karyn Fendley, Lei Lei Joy, Marika Bryant, Jacqueline King, Leonie Jackson, Caroline McKay and Stephen Hall as the participating artists troupe.
